Stir-fried Chayote ~ Tumis Labu Siam June 25, 2010

For those of you who have never heard of “Chayote”, don’ t be discouraged.. I didn’t even know the word “Chayote” before I wrote this blog…!!! In seeking to find the approriate English term for what we call in Indonesia, Labu Siam, I google translator-ed it, and out came this weird word.. 🙂

Bagi mereka yang belum pernah dengar kata “Chayote”, jangan berkecil hati.. Aku pun belum pernah dengar istilah ini sebelum menulis blog ini…!!  Dalam rangka mencari istilah bahasa inggrisnya, aku ngetik pake Google Translator, dan keluarlah istilah yang aneh ini 🙂

So Chayote is actually a type of Squash. I remember the first time I came across this vegetable was when I was 15 and visiting my home-origin-city, Toraja, my Grandmother cooked it for me, it was in her garden… I thought it was a kind of pumpkin, because the leaves had he same form as pumpkin leaves.. Turns out it was a type of squash!

Jadi, labu siam itu memang masuk dalam keluarga labu. Aku inget, pertama kali liat sayuran ini waktu umur 15 tahun dan lagi pulang kampung ke Toraja. Nenekku memasaknya buat kita, langsung dari hasil kebun..Tadinya emang aku udah mikir ini sejenis labu, soalnya daunnya emang mirip banget.. eh, ternyata bener!

Chayote is quit easy to find in Indonesia, and quit cheap.. Dunno about other place though, sorry 😦 Maybe you can check your local market? I actually found out reading wikipedia.com, that in Australia, Chayote grows really well (they call it “Choko” their). This is quit ironic seeing that in my first school years I spent in Australia, not once had I ever tasted a Chayote dish, haha!

Labu Siam emang mudah sekali ditemukan di Indonesia, dan harganya cukup murah. Aku kurang tau ketersediannya kalo di tempat-tempat lain, sorry 😦 Mungkin bisa cek di Pasar Lokal? Sebenernya menurut wikipedia.com, labu siam cukup banyak di Australia (namanya disana: Choko). Ini ironis sekali, soalnya selama tahun-tahun pertama sekolah waktu kecil disana, belum pernah satu kalipun aku nyicipin masakan pake sayur ini.. haha..!

Anyway, the taste of Chayote is really nice, with a hint of sweet flavour.. It has an apple texture to it, just without the crunch. It’s great for those dieting as well. At least, that’s what I’ve been told 🙂 You can just peel them, and boil them, serve them with some Sambal, and it tastes sooo delish 🙂 That’s what the Sundanese people like to do with Chayote (and i LOVE it!)

Rasa dari Labu siam enak, dengan sedikit rasa manis.. Teksturnya mirip apple, tanpa rasa garingnya. Juga bagus banget buat mereka yang lagi diet. Setidaknya, itu yang dibilang orang-orang 🙂 Tinggal dikupas, rebus, trus sajikan dengan sambel, wiiiiih, rasanya mantaaaab banget 🙂 Gaya begitu yang biasanya disajikan oleh masakan Sunda (dan aku CINTA banget sama rasanya!)

Hope you guys have fun trying out this dish..It’s really simple, yet so delish! Oh, a warning though! Use a plastic bag to wrap your fingers when peeling Chayotes cause the it has a lot of sap!

Semoga kalian have fun mencoba sajian ini.. Cara buatnya mudah banget, namun rasanya enak banget! Oh, sedikit peringatan! Pakailah kantong plastik sebagai sarung tangan ketika mengupas Labu Siam, soalnya banyak banget getahnya!

Stir-fried Chayote Recipe

3 Chayote – peel, cut

3 Garlic – thin slices

1 Shallot – thin slices

1 Cayanne Pepper (optional)

Water, Salt & Pepper

  • Stir-fry the garlic and shallots till the aroma flavours come out
  • Add Chayote
  • Add a little bit of water, salt and pepper
  • Stir till Chayote is cooked

Resep Tumis Labu Siam

3 buah Labu Siam – kupas, potong

3 siung Bawang Putih – potong tipis memanjang

1 Bawang Merah – potong tipis memanjang

1 Cabe Merah (optional)

Air, Garam, Lada

  • Tumis Bawang Putih dan Bawang Merah hingga harum
  • Masukkan Labu Siam
  • Tambahkan sedikit air, garam dan lada
  • Masak hingga matang
